The Buffalo Bills originated in 1960 as a member of the AFL (American Football League) and would join the NFL with the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. For the first 13 years, the Bills played their home games at War Memorial Stadium. In 1970 however, the NFL mandated that stadiums must hold a minimum of 50,000 seats, forcing the Bills to either leave town or build a stadium.  With owner Ralph Wilson exploring options to relocate, Rich Stadium went up quicker than expected and the Bills settled in prior to the 1973 season. 45 years and plenty of renovations later the Bills haven’t moved. While the team has remained, the stadium name hasn’t; what was once Rich Stadium became known as Ralph Wilson Stadium from 1998-2015 and was renamed a third time to New Era Field.

The Bills, arguably more notably than any other franchise, has withstood as much heartbreak as success in their history. Buffalo is the only team in the history of the NFL to win four conference championships in a row (1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994). In those four Super Bowl appearances however, the Bills came up short each time – making themselves the only franchise to ever lose four consecutive Super Bowls.

Buffalo has made the playoffs 18 times in their history but had to weather a 17-year long playoff drought from 1999-2017. The Bills have won 11 division titles in their history and have picked up 7 of those (1980, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995) since joining the AFC East with the AFL-NFL merger.

With the highs and lows of their past, the Bills have produced some legendary talent. Jim Kelly is a name possibly most synonymous with the Bills. The quarterback spent his entire career in Buffalo and led the Bills to their four straight Super Bowl appearances. Teaming up with Kelly in Buffalo during the 90’s was Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas. Thomas was a five-time Pro Bowler, twice was named as a first team All-Pro and was honored as league MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the Year in the 1991-92 season. Bruce Smith was also a member of the Super Bowl teams, spending 15 seasons of his career with the Bills. Smith remains the NFL’s all-time sack leader prior to the 2019-2020 season amassing 200 in his career. Smith was an 11-time Pro Bowler, a first team All-Pro 8 times and was twice named NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1990 and 1996).
