The Denver Broncos were founded in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL before joining the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL merger. The Broncos played their home games at Mile High Stadium from 1960 until 2000. The following year they moved into their current home, Broncos Stadium at Mile High.

Denver started slow as a franchise, struggling to compete in their AFL stint and even after joining the NFL the Broncos wouldn't make the playoffs until 1977. Since that season however Denver has found their footing. The Broncos have appeared in an astonishing eight Super Bowls since that 1977 season, winning three of them (XXXII, XXXIII, 50).  Their eight AFC Championships is second only to the New England Patriots (11).

In total, Denver has made 22 playoff appearances prior to the 2019-20 season. The Broncos have also captured 15 division championships, all of which have come as a member of the AFC West.

Perhaps the most notable Bronco remains John Elway. The former quarterback led Denver to back-to-back Super Bowl titles (XXXII, XXXIII). Elway was a 9-time Pro Bowler, was named MVP following the 1987 season and was twice named AFC Offensive Player of the Year after the 1987 season and 1993 seasons. Elway has remained with the franchise, currently serving as general manager and president of football operations.

Elway's running mate in these Super Bowls was Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis. Known as T.D., Davis would be named MVP following the 1998 season, twice was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year (1996, 1998) and was MVP of Super Bowl XXXII.

Peyton Manning also spent the last four seasons of his career in Denver winning Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos and had his best statistical season of his career in Denver throwing for career highs in passing yards (5,477) and touchdowns (55) in the 2013 season.
