Detroit Red Wings History
On May 15, 1926, a Detroit group received confirmation of the buyout of a new NHL team. Previously known as the Victoria Cougars, the Cougars took home in Detroit. Jack Adams was the team’s head coach and general manager and in 1928, Adams lead the team to the playoffs. Although falling in performance and financially, the team was given a second chance when James Norris Sr. came in to give the team a financial saving worked with Adams to create a new team. Together, the Detroit Red Wings were given birth. After this revamping, the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 1936 and 1937 with standout players Larry Aurie, Ebbie Goodfellow, Herbie Lewis, Hec Kilrea and John Sorrell.

The Red Wings started play in a new arena called the Olympia Stadium where the team would play until 1980. Currently, the Red Wings take action in Little Caesar’s Arena with head coach Jeff Blashill. Among the years in Red Wings history, 58 players have retired jersey numbers. The most recent inductee is Rogatien “Rogie” Vachon in 2016. The forever captain of the Red Wings is given tribute to Steve Yzerman. He lead them to three Stanley Cups and was regarded as one of the best to come through the town and franchise.
