The Los Angeles Chargers are based in the Greater Los Angeles, California area, and will play their home games in the brand new SoFI Stadium beginning in 2020. The Chargers will share the stadium with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Chargers franchise began in August of 1959, with their first playing season coming in 1960. The team originated in Los Angeles and played their first season inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for one season before moving to San Diego, California, where the team was located until the end of the 2016 season. The Chargers played at Balboa Stadium from 1961-1966 before moving into SDCCU Stadium in 1967. The team played at SDCCU Stadium until 2016 when the team left San Diego.

The Chargers franchise entered existence as charter members of the American Football League in 1960 and played within the Western Division of the AFL. When the AFL and NFL merged together in 1970, the Chargers became members of the American Football Conference, playing within the AFC West. The Chargers have won one championship, taking home the AFL Championship in 1963. The team has claimed fifteen Division Championships since their inception, including one Conference championship in 1994. The Chargers have appeared in the playoffs nineteen times entering the 2020 season.

The Chargers only Super Bowl appearance came in the 1994 season when the team finished 11-5 behind a hot 6-0 start led by Hall of Famer Junior Seau and the stout defense. The team upset the heavily favored Dolphins and Steelers in the playoffs before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX.

The Chargers have been close to the Super Bowl multiple times since the 1994 season, making the most noise in the mid-to-late 2000s. The team made the postseason five times from 2004-2009, including a 14-2 record in 2006, but failed to get past the AFC Championship game in any of those seasons.

The Chargers have had a bevy of phenomenal players in their history, with twelve players enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The most notable chargers in the hall of fame are Dan Fouts, Junior Seau and LaDainian Tomlinson. Former franchise quarterback Philip Rivers is also thought of to be a future Hall of Fame player.

After drafting promising young quarterback Justin Herbert, the Chargers are now trying to build around him in hopes of challenging the Chiefs for the AFC West. With players such as Keenan Allen and Joey Bosa helping to lead the way, the Chargers franchise seems to be headed in the right direction.
