The Oakland Athletics are one of the eight charter franchises of the American League, getting their start as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901. The Athletics left Philadelphia for Kansas City in 1955 before ultimately moving out to Oakland in 1968.

The Oakland Athletics are members of the American League, playing within the American League Western Division. Other members of the American League West are the Los Angeles Angels, the Houston Astros, the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers.

The Athletics have won nine World Series titles in their history, with the first coming in 1910 and their most recent coming in 1989. The Athletics have won fifteen American League pennants and have won sixteen division titles.

The Oakland Athletics mascot, a white elephant, came about in the early 1900s when then-manager Connie Mack adopted the elephant after New York Giants manager John McGraw told a reporter that the new owner of the Athletics had, “a real white elephant on his hands.” The nickname stuck, and elephants were on Athletics uniforms by 1918.

The Oakland Athletics play their home games inside the Oakland Coliseum, a stadium they have played in since their move to Oakland in 1968. The team has played in just four stadiums since their inception, playing in Columbia Park (1901-1908) and Shibe Park (1909-1954) in Philadelphia before playing in Municipal Stadium in Kansas City from 1955-1968.

The Athletics have had many great players in their franchise’s history, including multiple Hall of Famers. Some of the best players from the Oakland era are Rickey Henderson, Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers and Reggie Jackson. They have also had some of the best managers in baseball history, including Connie Mack and Tony LaRussa.

Despite not winning a World Series since 1989, the Athletics have been a strong franchise over the past 30 years behind forward-thinking owner Billy Beane, who took over as general manager in 1997. Beane introduced baseball to the Moneyball era, using analytics to build a team over more traditional thinking.
