The Philadelphia Phillies play in the National League within the East division. The East division also contains the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, and the Washington Nationals. The Phillies have a rich history within baseball, dating back to the late 1800’s.

In 1883, the National League awarded Philadelphia an expansion team after the Worcester Brown Stockings ended their franchise in 1882. The team was called the Philadelphia Quakers but had a hard time getting off the ground. In their first year, the Quakers had below a .200 record and struggled to earn wins both home and away. After one year of downs, the Quakers hired a new manager, Harry Wright, and changed their name to the Philadelphias. However, this name was too long for newspapers and headlines and the media began to revert to calling them Quakers. But one newspaper decided to shorten the name and called the team, “The Phillies.” This nickname stuck and in 1890, the team officially changed its name to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Unfortunately, a new name wasn’t enough to help the team to secure more wins. And when a tragedy occurred in 1903, a collapse at the Baker Bowl killing fans and injuring many more, the team was sold to a new owner. Though the team won the National League pennant in 1915, it would be another three and a half decades later until they won again.

In the late 1940’s a group came together known as the “Whiz Kids.” Star players like Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts were apart of the young and upcoming players brought to the Phillies and helped the Phillies gain success within the league. The crew won their first pennant since 1915, and became the NL champions in 1950. Though the team fell to the Yankees in the World Series, the fanbase grew thanks to the success the Whiz Kids brought to the franchise.

In the mid 1970’s key players like Mike Schmidt and Larry Bowa helped the team win three NL East division titles in a row, 1976, 1977, and 1978.
