The Carolina Panthers became the 29th franchise to join the NFL in 1995. Carolina spent that first season playing at Memorial Stadium, home of the Clemson Tigers. The Panthers then moved into Ericcson stadium the following year. In 2004, Erricson stadium would get renamed to Bank of America Stadium.

The Panthers promptly made their mark on the NFL, going 7-9 in their inaugural season, which still stands as the best record for an NFL expansion team in their first season. The next season the Panthers would post a 12-4 regular season record and advance to the NFC Championship game. The successful start to the franchise has proven to be no fluke. The Panthers have already appeared in two Super Bowls (XXXVIII and 50) in their history. While winless in their Super Bowl appearances, Carolina has made 11 playoff trips prior to kicking off the 2020 campaign. The Panthers have also claimed six division titles (1996, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015) with five of those coming as a member of the NFC South.

Of the names most synonymous with the Panthers organizations, Julius Peppers may top the list. The defensive end spent 10 of his 17 NFL seasons with the Panthers. Peppers enjoyed some of his best seasons in Carolina and currently ranks 4th on the all-time sack list with 159.5 to his name. Peppers was a 9-time Pro Bowler, 3-time first team All-Pro and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2002. Jake Delhomme spent seven seasons quarterbacking the Panthers and is most fondly remembered in Carolina for helping lead them to Super Bowl XXXVIII. Steve Smith was one of those quite familiar with Delhomme and the rest of Panthers faithful spending nearly all of his 16-year career lining up at receiver for Carolina. While with the Panthers, Smith was a 5-time Pro Bowler, twice was named first team All-Pro and was the Comeback Player of the Year in 2005 – a year in which he led the league in receptions (103), receiving yards (1563) and receiving touchdowns (12). Smith also played multiple seasons with Cam Newton, who led the Panthers to their second Super Bowl appearance in 2015.

After trading for young quarterback Sam Darnold, the Panthers will look to surround their new quarterback with more talent, especially on the defensive end. With players such as Robby Anderson, D.J. Moore, and Christian McCaffrey on offense, their team is only a defense away from being a real threat in the NFC South.
