The Pittsburgh Steelers franchise was founded in 1933 by Arthur Rooney and is currently the seventh-oldest franchise in the NFL and the oldest franchise in the AFC. The Rooney family still owns the team to this day. The team was founded as the Pittsburgh Pirates, but their name was later changed to the “Steelers” in 1940. The early years for the Pittsburgh franchise were rough, but that all changed in the 1970s. From 1972 to 1979, the team ripped off eight consecutive playoff berths, winning seven AFC Central titles, four AFC Championships and four Super Bowls.
The Steelers have won six Super Bowl Championships, tied with the New England Patriots for the most ever by a franchise, with their most recent championship coming in 2009. Overall, the team is 6-2 in the Super Bowl. They have been to the playoffs 34 times and have won 24 division titles, 15 of those when they played in the AFC Central and 9 in the AFC North.
Chuck Noll was the coach of the Steelers for 22 years from 1969-1991. Noll was known for his outstanding draft picks helping the Steelers form a dynasty in the 1970s. Bill Cowher took over after Noll and coached until 2006 and Mike Tomlin has been the coach since 2007. Tomlin has never recorded a losing season as a coach. Each of the three coaches has won a Super Bowl for the Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had many notable players and Hall of Famers who have played for them. Some of those include Terry Bradshaw, Troy Polamalu, Mel Blount, Jerome Bettis and Ben Roethlisberger.
