Oklahoma State University, also known as OSU, is a large university located in Stillwater, OK. The Morrill Act of 1862, allowed for land-grant colleges to be created using federal land sales. Because of this act during the American Civil War, the Morrill Act of 1890 helped to give birth to the school.

Originally, OSU was known as Oklahoma A&M. It wasn’t until spring of 1957 that the school changed its name to Oklahoma State University of Agricultural and Applied Sciences. However, within months after the name change, the school decided to go with just Oklahoma State University.

The school’s mascot is Pistol Pete. The athletes are often referred to as the OSU Cowboys or OSU Cowgirls. Another common name is the “Pokes.” OK State’s colors are orange and black. The school competes in the NCAA Division 1- Big 12 conference.

The OSU Cowboy’s basketball team began in 1938. The Cowboys play in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The team has won two National Championships, in back-to-back years in 1945 and 1946.

Henry Iba coached at OSU from 1934 until 1970. Mr. Iba was known throughout the campus and is a staple to the school’s history. To this day, one chair within the basketball arena is left unused, in honor of him.

Some of the great NBA stars came from OSU. Point Guard, Tony Allen, played for OSU for two years from 2002-2004. Guard, Marcus Smart, known for being very active and aggressive on the court, played for the Cowboys from 2012-2014. John Starks, Desmond Mason, Bryant Reecem and Mike Conley Jr. also played for Oklahoma State and went on to be successful professional basketball players.
