The Buffalo Bills originated in 1960 as a member of the AFL (American Football League) and would join the NFL with the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Buffalo is the only team in the history of the NFL to win four conference championships in a row (1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994). In those four Super Bowl appearances however, the Bills came up short each time – making themselves the only franchise to ever lose four consecutive Super Bowls.
Buffalo has made the playoffs 23 times in their 54-year history as an NFL franchise but had to weather a 17-yearlong playoff drought from 1999-2017. The Bills have won 14 division titles in their history and have picked up 11 of those (1980, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) since joining the AFC East with the AFL-NFL merger.
Where do the Buffalo Bills play?
For the first 13 years, the Bills played their home games at War Memorial Stadium. In 1970 however, the NFL mandated that stadiums must hold a minimum of 50,000 seats, forcing the Bills to either leave town or build a stadium. With owner Ralph Wilson exploring options to relocate, Rich Stadium went up quicker than expected and the Bills settled in prior to the 1973 season. 45 years and plenty of renovations later the Bills haven’t moved. While the team has remained, the stadium name hasn’t; what was once Rich Stadium became known as Ralph Wilson Stadium from 1998-2015 and was renamed to New Era Field from 2016-2019. The Bills currently play in Highmark Stadium.
