The Chicago Cubs were a founding member of the National League in 1876, but the franchise began as the Chicago White Stockings in 1870. Their team name was changed to the Chicago Cubs ahead of the 1903 season.
The Cubs play their home games inside Wrigley Field, one of the oldest and most famous ballparks in all of baseball. Chicago began playing at Wrigley Field in 1916 when the field was named Weeghman Park. In 1920, William Wrigley, Jr. purchased the Cubs and renamed the stadium Cubs Park. In 1926, the stadium was again renamed, with the name Wrigley Field adopted by the city.
The Chicago Cubs are members of the National League, playing within the National League Central Division. Other teams within the division are the Cincinnati Reds, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cubs have won a total of seven division titles, seventeen National League pennants and three World Series championships. The Cubs became the first team to ever make three consecutive World Series appearances from 1906-1908, winning in both 1907 and 1908. The team would return to the World Series seven more times between 1910 and 1945, but never came away victorious.
The Cubs did not return to the World Series again until 2016 when they defeated the Cleveland Indians, ending a 71-year National League pennant drought and a 108-year World Series championship drought, both of which were records.
The Cubs have a strong history of great players, with sixteen players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame as members of the franchise. Some of the most recognizable and lovable Cubs in the Hall of Fame include Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Billy Herman, Lee Smith, Ron Santo and Ryne Sandberg.
Ernie Banks, nicknamed “Mr. Cub,” played for the Cubs from 1953-1971 after getting his start with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues. Banks was a 14-time All-Star for the Cubs, winning two National League MVP awards while leading the league in home runs and RBIs twice in his career.
