The Utah Jazz was founded in 1974 in New Orleans. The name "Jazz" was to pay tribute to the history of Jazz music and festivals in New Orleans. The team began in Louisiana in 1974 under the resources of Fred Rosenfeld and Sam Battistone. These two, along with seven others, paid a collective $6.15 million to give birth to the Jazz. A few months later, the Jazz traded a few draft picks for Pete Maravich from the Atlanta Hawks. Maravich played college ball at LSU and he was the perfect pick as the first-ever player for the Jazz.
However, in the years in New Orleans, the Jazz were not successful. The team struggled with venues and arenas and couldn't quite build a sturdy foundation for a team. After some poor trades and bad picks, Sam Battistone decided it was time to move the team. Salt Lake City proved to be a smaller market, but a market that wanted a basketball team nonetheless. The Jazz have been known for their strong defense and teamwork over the years, with several notable players having played for the team, such as John Stockton, Karl Malone, and Donovan Mitchell. They have made it to the NBA Finals twice, in 1997 and 1998, but lost on both occasions to the Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan.
