The Houston Rockets were founded back in 1967. The Rockets compete in the Western Conference of the NBA within the Southwest Division. In 1967, the team was originally known as the San Diego Rockets. Four years later, the team was then transferred to Houston where they remain today. All home games are played inside Toyota Center.
The team made their first playoff appearance in 1968 with the draft selection of Elvin Hayes. Although the Rockets couldn't capitalize on their playoff advancement, the team was ready to make their stand in the league. By 1976, the team trade for Moses Malone and he single-handedly led the team to a conference playoff series in his first year with the team. By 1981, Malone helped take the Rockets to an NBA playoff series but lost to the Celtics with their star player Larry Bird. In 1984, the Rockets draft Hakeem Olajuwon and he began to turn things around to help the Rockets secure wins. By 1986-1987, Olajuwon competed hard in the league and lead the Rockets to another NBA playoff series, but again, lost to Larry Bird and the Celtics. The Rockets were tired of getting to the playoffs and losing and we out for blood. In 1994, Olajuwon took the team to another series and helped the Rockets claim their first National Championship against the New York Knicks lead by Patrick Ewing.
Though many greats have played for the Rockets, and Malone and Olajuwon won MVP honors with the team, the MVP title would not be claimed again until All-Star James Harden joined the Rockets. The Houston Rockets acquired James Harden in 2012 and began a new era of basketball.
After James Harden left for Brooklyn in one of the craziest trades in NBA history, the Rockets entered rebuild mode. The team is currently led by up-and-coming center Christian Wood along with established player Victor Oladipo. Additionally, John Wall, a potential Hall of Famer, is also on the team, but his future in Houston is unclear. After years and years of playoff appearances with Harden, the Rockets will likely have at least a short playoff drought. While the team is significantly worse off without Harden, they seem to be on the right path to a quality rebuild.
