The Arizona Diamondbacks entered baseball as an expansion franchise in 1998. They joined the league at the same time as the Tampa Bay Rays, with one joining the American League and on the National League as baseball’s 29th and 30th franchises.
The Diamondbacks play their homes games inside Chase Field, which was their original home when the team began playing in 1998. The stadium was originally named Bank One Ballpark from 1998 through 2005, before being renamed Chase Field ahead of the 2006 season.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are members of the National League, playing within the National League West Division. Other members of the National League West include the Colorado Rockies, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres, and the San Francisco Giants.
In their short history, the Diamondbacks have had a good amount of success in reaching the postseason. They have won the National League West a total of five times, winning their first and only National League pennant and World Series in 2001. Their first division title came in just their second season in 1999, with their most recent coming in 2011. Their most recent playoff appearance came in 2017 as a Wild Card team.
Their 2001 playoff run is still one of the most impressive in baseball history. The Diamondbacks won the NL West and then defeated the storied St. Louis Cardinals in the divisional round of the playoffs on a walk-off hit by Tony Womack. They then beat the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS in just five games, and then beat the mighty New York Yankees in seven games on a walk-off hit by Luis Gonzalez.
While the Diamondbacks currently do not have any members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, they have had multiple hall of famers play for the franchise. The most notable player in franchise history is likely Randy Johnson, who played for Arizona from 1999-2004 and in 2007-2008. Johnson won four consecutive Cy Young awards with the Diamondbacks from 1999-2002.
