The Texas Rangers began in Washington D.C. as the Washington Senators in 1961. The original Washington Senators in D.C. moved to Minnesota to become the Minnesota Twins, and they kept the history and statistics of the team, even after becoming the Twins. So D.C. created a new Washington Senators, but it was looked at as an expansion team since the originals are claimed by the Twins. The second Senators, by 1972, had moved to Arlington, TX and took a new name based from the law enforcement department in Arlington called the Rangers. Therefore, the 1972 season opened with the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers have had a long and successful history, making the playoffs seven times since 1996 and winning the American League pennant in 2010 and 2011. The team has also won five division titles, most recently in 2016. The Rangers have had some of the greatest players in baseball history, including Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Ivan Rodriguez, and Adrian Beltre. The Rangers have also had some of the most passionate fans in baseball, with the team consistently ranking in the top 10 in attendance since the mid-1990s.
