The St. Louis Cardinals franchise was established in 1882, and the team was originally known as the Brown Stockings. That name was shortened to the Browns in 1883, and then changed in 1899 to the "Perfectos" before the team settled on the Cardinals in 1900. A total of 17 players and managers have been inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame as members of the Cardinals organization, including Rogers Hornsby, Dizzy Dean, Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith and Whitey Herzog, among others. A total of 47 players and managers inducted into the Hall of Fame have been members of the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

The Cardinals currently play in Busch Stadium in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, and have done so since the stadium opened for the 2007 season. From 1966-2005, the Cardinals played in what was known as Busch Memorial Stadium. The team originally played in Sportsman's Park, which was renamed to Busch Stadium in 1953 when the Anheuser-Busch Brewery purchased the Cardinals. In all, the Cardinals have played in three stadiums that donned the name Busch Stadium.

In 2009, the St. Louis Cardinals became the fourth franchise to reach 10,000 victories. Two seasons later, the Cardinals won the World Series behind late-game heroics from hometown hero David Freese, who hit a pair of late home runs, including a walkoff in Game 6 to send the series to a deciding game. After the World Series victory, manager Tony LaRussa became the first manager in baseball history to retire after winning a championship. LaRussa is the winningest manager in Cardinals history with 1,408 victories.
