Founded in 1972, the Colorado Avalanche were originally based in Quebec and were called the Quebec Nordiques. From 1972-1979, the team played in the WHA before switching to the NHL in 1979. In 1995, the Nordiques moved to Colorado, and they have been the Colorado Avalanche since.

In their near 50-year history, the Colorado Avalanche have had a good amount of success. In total, the Avalanche have won 10 division championships, three Presidents’ Trophies, two conference championships and two Stanley Cups, with the most recent coming in the 2000-01 season.
