The Houston Astros entered professional baseball as an expansion team in 1962 under their original name, the Houston Colt .45s. The Colt .45s name stuck for three seasons until it was switched to the Astros ahead of the 1965 season.

The Astros play their home games inside Minute Maid Park, which is located Houston. The team began playing at Minute Maid Park in 2000 after playing at the historic Astrodome from 1965 until 1999. Before the Astrodome, the team played at Colt Stadium from 1962 to 1964.

The Houston Astros were originally members of the National League, playing within the National League Central Division. In 2013, baseball realigned, and the Astros switched to the American League and joined the American League West Division. Other members of the American League West consist of the Los Angeles Angels, the Oakland Athletics, the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers.

In their history, the Astros have won division titles across three separate divisions, including the National League West (1980, 1986), the National League Central (1997, 1998, 1999, 2001) and the American League West (2017, 2018, 2019). The Astros have also won three pennants, including the 2005 National League pennant and the American League pennant in both 2017 and 2019. The Astros lone World Series victory came in 2017 when they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their most recent playoff appearance came with a wild-card birth in 2020, and they finished their season with an ALCS Game 7 loss, sending the Tampa Bay Rays to the World Series.

The Houston Astros have had multiple players enshrined at baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The first two players to reach the Hall of Fame as members of the Astros are Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio. Biggio was elected into the Hall of Fame in 2015, with Bagwell following suit two years later in 2017. Other members of the Hall of Fame that spent a portion of their career with the Astros include Randy Johnson, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and Nolan Ryan, among others.
