The Miami Marlins joined professional baseball as an expansion franchise in 1993, entering the league as the Florida Marlins. The team officially changed their name from the Florida Marlins to the Miami Marlins in November of 2011.

The Miami Marlins play their home games at Marlins Park in downtown Miami, Florida. The stadium opened in 2012, giving the Marlins a new home after playing at Joe Robbie Stadium, now Hard Rock Stadium, from 1993 until 2011.

The Marlins are members of the National League, playing within the National League East Division. Other members of the division are the Atlanta Braves, the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals.

The Miami Marlins have an interesting history, winning two World Series titles despite never having won a division crown. The Marlins have made the playoffs just twice in their history, in 1997 and 2003. In both instances, the Marlins made the playoffs as a Wild Card team, but in both seasons, they won the World Series. The Marlins defeated the Cleveland Indians to claim the title in 1997 before defeating the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic in 2003. The Marlins are the only franchise across the four major sports to have never lost a playoff round in their existence.

In their short existence, the Marlins have never had a player reach the baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the franchise, but the team has had plenty of Hall of Famers don the Marlins uniform. Two of the most notable former Marlins to make the Hall of Fame are Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and Trevor Hoffman. Rodriguez helped the Marlins win a World Series, while Hoffman was a key part of a 1993 trade that brought slugger Gary Sheffield to the Marlins. Sheffield was a key part of the 1997 World Series team, playing with the Marlins from 1993 until 1998.
