The Philadelphia 76ers date back 1946 but were formerly known as the Syracuse Nationals. By 1963, the Syracuse Nationals became no more, but the team itself was still relevant and found a new home in Philadelphia after the Philadelphia Warriors moved to San Francisco. Therefore, the former Syracuse Nationals found themselves to be the only professional team in Philly. Like most professional teams in a new city, the city held a contest to name the team. One man thought about the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776. Therefore the "76ers" name was created. It was a great name and became an instant hit. The 76ers is often shortened to the Sixers. The team has won three titles, with their most recent coming in 1983 with a sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Some of the best players for the 76ers include Allen Iverson, Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, and Julius Erving. Although the team has only been to the championship round a few times, the Sixers are often known to produce some of the greatest players in the league.
