The Boston Red Sox, one of the American League’s charter franchises, came into existence as the Boston Americans in 1901. The team officially changed their name to the Boston Red Sox in 1908.

The Red Sox play their home games inside historic Fenway Park, which has been their home since 1912. The team originally played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds from 1901-1911 before moving into Fenway Park.

The Boston Red Sox are members of the American League, playing within the American League East Division. Other members of the AL East consist of the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Yankees, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Since divisions were set in 1969, the Red Sox have won ten AL East titles, with their first coming in 1975. The team has also made the playoffs as a Wild Card team seven times and have earned fourteen American League pennants. The Boston Red Sox have also won nine World Series championships, the third-most of any team in baseball.

How the Boston Red Sox have earned their nine World Series titles is very interesting. The team won five championships from 1903-1918 but would wait an unprecedented 86 years until they finally won another World Series in 2004. One theory that baseball fans entertain is that the Red Sox suffered from the “Curse of the Bambino,” which came about when they sold Babe Ruth to the rival New York Yankees in 1920. The Red Sox made multiple World Series appearances after Ruth went to the Yankees, but they lost each series in dramatic fashion.

Boston finally broke “the curse” in 2004, erasing a 3-0 deficit to the rival New York Yankees to come back and win the American League pennant, 4 games to 3. They then went on and swept the St. Louis Cardinals to reverse the curse and claim their first World Series title in 86 years. The Red Sox would win the series again three years later in 2007, then again in 2013 and 2018.
