The Indianapolis Colts came about in 1953 as the Baltimore Colts, playing in the National Football League. The team moved to Indianapolis from Baltimore in 1984.

The Colts played as members of the National Football League from 1953 until the 1970 NFL-AFL merger. They joined the newly formed American Football Conference in 1970. The Colts were members of the AFC East from 1970-2001 and currently play as members of the AFC South. The team currently plays in Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts have made the playoffs 29 times in their history heading into the 2021 season, with ten of those appearances coming with the team based in Baltimore. They have also appeared in the Super Bowl four times, twice in Baltimore and twice in Indianapolis. Their lone victory in Baltimore came in Super Bowl V and their lone victory in Indianapolis came in Super Bowl XLI when they defeated the Chicago Bears. The Colts also won three NFL Championships in Baltimore in 1958, 1959 and 1968.

The Indianapolis (Baltimore) Colts have a long history of legendary quarterback play, starting with Johnny Unitas. Unitas was the starting quarterback for the Baltimore Colts from 1956 to 1972. Unitas won four championships with the Colts in his career while finishing with a career mark of 116-56-3 in Baltimore. Unitas was a three-time MVP in his career and is thought of as one of the best players in the history of professional football.

The Colts then found another generational quarterback when they drafted Peyton Manning in 1998. Manning won Super Bowl XLI for the Indianapolis Colts, his lone championship victory with the team. In his Colts career, Manning won MVP four times (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009) while appearing in two Super Bowls with the team.

Manning moved on to Denver in 2012 while the Colts drafted Andrew Luck with the top pick in the draft. Luck led the Colts to three straight 11-5 seasons before struggling in an injury-shortened 2015 and 2016 season. Luck missed all of 2017 before returning to form in 2018, helping the team to a 10-6 record while throwing 39 touchdowns. Luck then abruptly retired ahead of the 2019 season.

The Colts will have another season with a new quarterback, as former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will get another shot at a starting job in Indianapolis. With second year running back Jonathan Taylor as well as one of the most prolific defenses in the NFL, the Colts are in position to return to the playoffs for the second year in a row.
