The New Orleans Saints were founded in 1966 by John W. Mecom Jr. and David Dixon, becoming the first professional football team in Louisiana and later joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1967.

In 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina the Saints split their home games between the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas and Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.
