The San Francisco 49ers franchise was founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference, but joined the NFL in 1949 when the two leagues merged. The 49ers were the first major professional sports franchise to be based in San Francisco. The name of "49ers" came about to commemorate the gold diggers who arrived in California during the Gold Rush of 1849.

The San Francisco 49ers play their home games in Levi's Stadium, which opened in 2014. Before that, the team played in Candlestick Park dating all the way back to 1970 when they moved from Kezar Stadium.

The 49ers have long been one of the most successful franchises in the NFL, winning five Super Bowls, though their last came in 1994. The team narrowly missed winning their sixth Super Bowl in 2019, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV in Miami.

Heading into the 2021 season, the 49ers have won 20 division championships and have made fifty-one playoff appearances, including 50 as members of the NFL. Hall of Fame head coach Bill Walsh led the 49ers to three of their Super Bowl victories with fellow Hall of Famer Joe Montana as his quarterback. Montana won four Super Bowls for the 49ers and became the first player in pro football history to win Super Bowl MVP three times.

While Montana and Walsh are the two names most synonymous with the 49ers franchise, the team has had its fair share of phenomenal players. A total of 25 players that spent time with the 49ers are enshrined in the pro football hall of fame, as well as three coaches/contributors. Some of the most notable members of the San Francisco 49ers are quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young and wide receivers Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens.

After drafting quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 Draft, the 49ers will soon begin the process of transitioning from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to Lance. With the re-signings of key players such as Trent Williams and Kyle Juszczyk and additions such as Samson Ebukam and Alex Mack, the 49ers once again have made the offseason moves necessary to keep their team intact. After missing the playoffs in 2020, the 49ers look like they will be right back in the postseason in 2021.
