The Miami Dolphins are based in Miami, Florida and play inside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The Dolphins were established in 1965 and played their first season in 1966 as members of the American Football League. After four seasons, the Dolphins joined the American Football Conference (AFC) as a full member of the National Football League as a result of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

The Dolphins have a rich tradition in the NFL, with the team making three consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the early 1970s. The team made their first Super Bowl appearance in 1971, falling to the Cowboys. The following season, the Dolphins completed the only perfect season in NFL history. The team finished 14-0 in the regular season and won all three of their playoff games, including a victory in Super Bowl VII. The Dolphins would once again bring home a championship in 1973, winning Super Bowl VIII.

The Miami Dolphins would make the playoffs three more times in the 1970s and then make five more playoff appearances in the 1980s. The team made seven playoff appearances in the 1990s but have made the playoffs just four times since the turn of the century.

The Dolphins of the 1970s and 1980s were feared all over the league, and a lot of that fear stemmed from legendary head coach Don Shula. Shula coached the Dolphins from 1970-1995, coming over from the Baltimore Colts (1963-69). Shula had just two seasons in which his teams did not have a winning record, and he led the Dolphins to five Super Bowl appearances.

Despite not winning a Super Bowl, one of the most prolific players of the Shula era was quarterback Dan Marino. Marino threw for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns in 1984, but the Dolphins fell in his lone appearance in the Super Bowl. Marino went on to have a Hall of Fame career, passing for more than 61,000 yards and 420 touchdowns. When he retired, Marino held more than 40 single season and career passing records.

After drafting quarterback Tua Tagavailoa in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Dolphins are looking to build around him and create a playoff worthy team. With offseason additions such as Jaylen Waddle and Jason McCourty, the Dolphins are headed in the right direction during their rebuild.
