Oklahoma State University, also known as OSU, is a large university located in Stillwater, OK. The Morrill Act of 1862, allowed for land-grant colleges to be created using federal land sales. Because of this act during the American Civil War, the Morrill Act of 1890 helped to give birth to the school.

Originally, OSU was known as Oklahoma A&M. It wasn’t until spring of 1957 that the school changed its name to Oklahoma State University of Agricultural and Applied Sciences. However, within months after the name change, the school decided to go with just Oklahoma State University.

The school’s mascot is Pistol Pete. The athletes are often referred to as the OSU Cowboys or OSU Cowgirls. Another common name is the “Pokes.” OK State’s colors are orange and black. The school competes in the NCAA Division 1- Big 12 conference.

Specifically, the Oklahoma State football team began in 1901. The football team plays in Boone Pickens Stadium and has so since 1913. It is known to be the oldest football stadium within the Big 12. The Boone Pickens Stadium was originally known as the Athletic Field and then the Lewis Field. It wouldn’t change to Boone Pickens until 2003 after OSU Alumni, T. Boone Pickens. Pickens founded Mesa Petroleum Company and donated millions back to the school.

The OSU Cowboys have won one National Title back in 1945, led by Jim Lookabaugh. In 2010, head coach Mike Gundy recorded the school’s first ever 11-win season and went on to win their first Big 12 Championship title. Not to mention, the team went into the post-season and beat Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl 41-38 in overtime.

Some of the NFL’s biggest stars came from Oklahoma State: Dez Bryant, Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, and Kevin Williams. Barry Sanders played for OSU from 1986-1988 as the key running back. He is the only player have one won the Heisman Award at Oklahoma State.
