St. Mary’s College of California is located in Moraga, California. The school is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and opened in 1863 by the Most Rev. Joseph Alemany. By 1868, the school was taken over by the De La Salle Christian Brothers. SMC sports the colors red and blue. The mascot is known as Gael. A gael is a person of Irish or Scottish decent. Because SMC’s football team, at one point, had so many Irishmen the team became known as the Gaels. Now, the Gael stands tall as an Irish warrior, representing hard work and dedication.

St. Mary’s Gaels men’s basketball team competes in the NCAA as part of the West Coast Conference. Just recently, the team won their conference in an iconic game against Gonzaga in 2019. The rivalry between SMC and Gonzaga has developed into a very strong and competitive one, with the conference title game in ’19 adding fuel to the fire.

The Gaels play their home games in McKeon Pavilion. George R. McKeon was a former Board of Regents member and a key contributor to the construction. Under head coach Randy Bennett, the Gaels have exceeded expectations, making Bennett the school’s winningest basketball coach of all time. He has often recruited players from Australian and helped the team develop length on the court. Since his coming in 2001, the team has continually gotten better, each year earning more wins.

Bennett has led the team to multiple NCAA tournament appearances. He has become a touted individual, receiving praise for his ability to recruit and develop players. Before him, the team had only made the tournament three times: 1959, 1989, and in 1997.

SMC has developed some great professional basketball players like point guard Patty Mills (SMC 2007-2009), shooting guard Matthew Dellavedova (SMC 2009-2013), and guard Brian Shaw (SMC 1983-1985).
