Born into a family of musicians, his father was a classical pianist, his mother encouraged him to learn piano at the age of four. William Martin, nicknamed Billy, Joel, took to playing piano and started to join bands. As he grew up, he knew he wanted to become an artist. The Beetles assured his dreams after watching the performance on T.V. and thus began a deep drive to succeed in the music industry. After the release of his 1971 album, "Cold Spring Harbor," Billy Joel found he wasn't satisfied with the production and decided to try elsewhere in order to make it to the top.
Living in L.A. Joel found a job as a pianist at a local lounge. This later inspired his legendary song, "Piano Man." By 1972, he was sought out by Columbia Records. Joel later began recording "Streetlife Serenade" in 1974. He created his own style of blues-jazz, pop and more and by the release of "The Stranger" in 1977, Billy Joel made the charts with four songs in the Top 25 of Billboard charts. After this breakthrough year, he won Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and People's Choice Award at the 1981 Grammys. To follow, in 1989, Billy won the Grammy Legend Award because of his success with "We Didn't Start the Fire" among his many other successful singles and albums.
In 1999, Billy Joel reached Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His idol, Ray Charles, inducted Billy into the list of legends and icons.
