The Atlanta Hawks settled in Atlanta in 1968 after twenty-plus years of struggling to find a permanent home. The franchise began in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons, but relocated to Illinois after just 38 days, becoming the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. In 1949, they joined the NBA and two years later moved to Milwaukee, shortening their names to the Hawks. They spent a few seasons there before moving to St. Louis for 13 seasons. After the 1967-68 season, the team was sold and relocated to Atlanta, where they have been ever since.

The Hawks play their home games inside State Farm Arena, which opened in 1999. The arena was originally named Philips Arena until its title changed after the 2018 season. State Farm Arena is located at 1 State Farm Drive in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.

The Atlanta Hawks are members of the Eastern Conference, playing within the Southeast Division. Other members of the Southeast Division include the Charlotte Hornets, the Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic and the Washington Wizards.

The Hawks have won six division titles since relocating to Atlanta, with the first coming in 1970 and the most recent coming in 2021. All four of their conference championships came with the team located in St. Louis, winning the Western Conference in 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1961. The franchise’s lone NBA Championship came in 1958.

The Atlanta Hawks have had some great players in their history. Some of the top players to play in Atlanta include Dominique Wilkins, Dikembe Mutombo and Lenny Wilkens. Wilkens played primarily in St. Louis, helping the Hawks win the Western Conference in 1960 and 1961. Mutombo is considered one of the greatest shot blockers of all-time, while Wilkins is widely considered one of the top dunkers in the history of the game. Another all-time dunker, Vince Carter, finished his impressive career with the Hawks, spending his final two seasons in Atlanta.

The team is currently led by star point guard Trae Young, who after only four years in the NBA was able to earn his first All-Star Game appearance.
