Home in Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Celtics began in 1946. The Celtics were part of the original eight teams of the NBA.

The Celtics compete in the Eastern Conference, specifically in the Atlantic Division. Other members of the Atlantic Division include the Brooklyn Nets, the New York Knicks, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Toronto Raptors.

The Boston Celtics play their home games inside TD Garden, which opened in 1995. The original name of the building was the FleetCenter, but the name changed to TD Banknorth Garden in 2005. In 2009, the name changed again to its current one, TD Garden.

Known for their consistent championships, the Celtics have gained the reputation of one of the most winningest teams in the playoffs, competing closely with the Los Angeles Lakers for most titles. The Boston Celtics have won 22 division titles, 21 conference championships and 17 NBA championships in their history, with the most recent coming in 2008. The 1960s were the most successful decade for the Celtics, winning their conference nine times and bringing home nine NBA titles.

The team's mascot is known as "Lucky the Leprechaun." Because of Boston's large Irish population, both the team's name and mascot pay tribute to Irish heritage in the area. The "Big Three" arose within the Celtics, originally with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. Another rise to success for three more star players reignited the "Big Three" of the Celtics with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. The latter brought Boston's most recent championship in 2008.

The Boston Celtics have had no shortage of great players in their history. From Boston's all-time leading scorer, John Havlicek, to the likes of Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and JoJo White, the Celtics have always had star players. The most recent true star of the Celtics is Paul Pierce, who is second all-time in scoring for Boston with 24,021 points. Pierce was a team captain from 2003-2013, and helped the Celtics to the 2008 title.

The team is currently led by star forward Jayson Tatum, along with another rising star Jaylen Brown. Former All-Star point guard Kemba Walker is the third star of the team, with Tatum and Brown getting the majority of the shots.
