Detroit Lions Events

The Detroit Lions officially began in 1930 as the Porstmouth Spartans. Being in Portsmouth, Ohio created challenges in what was the NFL’s smallest city at the time and the Spartans were purchased and relocated to Detroit in 1934 and renamed the Lions.

The Detroit Lions found early success in the NFL, winning four championships (1935, 1952, 1953, 1957). The Detroit Lions have found recent success after Dan Campbell took over as head coach and have been featured on HBO’s popular show, Hard Knocks. Detroit remains the lone NFC team to have never appeared in a Super Bowl prior to the start of the 2024 season.

The Lions have a longstanding tradition of playing on Thanksgiving Day when the original owner negotiated an agreement with NBC to carry their games since 1934. One of the all-time leading rushers, Barry Sanders, played on the Lions from 1989-1998 where he amassed 15,000 rushing yards and 99 touchdowns.

Where do the Detroit Lions play?

Once the team moved to Detroit, the Lions moved into Detroit Stadium prior to the 1934 season. From there they moved to Briggs Field in 1938 and split time with baseball’s Detroit Tigers. 37 years later the Lions moved into the Pontiac Silverdome where they would stay for 37 years until 2002 when they moved again, this time into their current stadium, Ford Field.
