The Las Vegas Raiders came into existence as a charter member of the AFL in 1960 and joined the NFL as part of the merger in 1970. Their history is one of the most interesting in the NFL as the team has moved cities three times. The team began as the Oakland Raiders in 1960 and played there until the end of the 1981 season. The team, under the leadership of Al Davis, then moved to Los Angeles in 1982 and played there through the 1994 season. After that season, the team moved back to Oakland, and played there from 1995 until the conclusion of the 2019 season before moving to Las Vegas in 2020.

The Raiders won their lone AFL Championship in 1967, and have also won fifteen division titles (3 AFL and 12 NFL), four AFC Championships (1976, 1980, 1983 and 2002) and three Super Bowl Championships (XI, XV and XVIII).

The franchise is known for their widespread fan base and distinctive team culture, with the fan base earning the distinctive title of “Raider Nation.” The team’s colors are silver and black, and no matter where the team plays its home games, the environment is always a raucous one.

After winning Super Bowl XVIII, the team began to struggle on the field. In 2018, the team took a drastic step to try and rebuild a winning culture by hiring former head coach Jon Gruden to a 10-year, $100 million deal in 2018. Gruden had not coached in the NFL for nine seasons and was in the booth for Monday Night Football before accepting the position of head coach of the Raiders.

The Raiders officially moved to Las Vegas ahead of the 2020 season and will play their home games at the brand-new Allegiant Stadium. The stadium is in Paradise, Nevada and will also host the UNLV Rebels college football team.

After another season without playoff football in 2020, the Raiders are desperately trying to break their four year playoff drought. With quarterback Derek Carr under center, the Raiders will look to bring some more competition to the loaded AFC West.
