The San Diego Padres franchise was established as an expansion team within Major League Baseball in 1969. The Padres are members of the National Leagues, playing within the National League West Division with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.

The Padres are one of just two franchises to originate in the state of California, joining the Los Angeles Angels. The Padres are also the only franchise that does not share a city with another franchise in the four major American professional sports leagues. San Diego housed both the Padres and San Diego Chargers until the Chargers moved to Los Angeles in 2017.

The San Diego Padres have won two National League pennants in their history, with the first coming in 1984 and the most recent coming in 1998. The Padres are currently one of six franchises to have not won a World Series, falling in both of their appearances in the Fall Classic. Their most recent playoff appearance was in 2020 as they secured a spot in a Wild Card Series with the Cardinals. They would go on to win the series in three games, but they would proceed to be swept by their divisional rival and eventual World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

In their 50+ year history, the Padres have had some of the greatest players to ever play the sport. The two most notable names in San Diego Padres history are Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman.

Tony Gwynn, nicknamed “Mr. Padre,” played for the Padres from 1982-2001, batting .338 in his career. Gywnn was a 15-time All-Star, winning seven Silver Slugger Awards and five Gold Glove Awards. Gwynn finished with 3,141 career hits and was a first ballot Hall of Famer, gaining induction into the Hall of Fame in 2007.

Trevor Hoffman spent 15 of his 18 seasons with the San Diego Padres and currently serves in a senior advisory role for the organization. Hoffman was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018, finishing his career with 601 career saves. Hoffman was the first major league pitcher to reach 500 career saves and 600 career saves. He made the All-Star team seven times and was named the NL Rolaids Relief Man Award winner twice in his career.
