The Toronto Blue Jays came about in 1977 as part of the Major League Baseball expansion that also brought the Seattle Mariners. Toronto initially tried to lure the San Francisco Giants to the city, but the decision was made by the league to expand.

Today, the Toronto Blue Jays play inside the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario. The domed stadium originally opened as SkyDome in 1989, but changed its name in 2004 by Rogers Communications, who purchased the team from Labatt Brewing Company in 2000. The Blue Jays are currently the only team in the MLB to play outside of the United States since the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, D.C. in 2005.

The Toronto Blue Jays are members of the American League, playing their games as members of the American League Eastern Division. Other teams within the AL East are the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays.

After struggling in the late-1970s and early 1980s, the Blue Jays enjoyed their first ever winning season in 1983. They won their first division championship in 1985, and over the next nine seasons they were the best team in their division. The Toronto Blue Jays won five division championships from 1985-1993, including three straight from 1991-93. The Blue Jays also won a pair of World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. Those teams were led by Roberto Alomar, Joe Carter, John Olerud and Devon White, and Toronto is still the fastest expansion team in MLB history to win a World Series, doing so in just 16 years of existence.

After the 1993 season, the Toronto Blue Jays missed the playoffs in 21 consecutive seasons before returning to the postseason in 2015 and 2016. The Blue Jays are still one of just two franchises (Miami Marlins) to be undefeated across multiple World Series appearances. Both franchises are 2-0. Their most recent playoff appearance came in 2020 with a Wild Card birth. In the Wild Card Series, they were swept by the eventual AL Pennant winner Tampa Bay Rays in two games.
