The Washington Nationals are members of Major League Baseball's National League, and play in the East Division. The Nationals are the eighth major league team to call Washington, D.C. home, and they began their tenure in the city in 2005. Before moving to Washington, D.C., the franchise was known as the Montreal Expos. The Expos were founded in 1969 as an expansion team, and were purchased by the MLB in 2002 before being renamed and relocated to the nation's capitol. Before the Nationals moved in, seven other franchises called Washington, D.C. home, including the Washington Senators, who moved to Texas in 1971.

The Nationals play their home games in Nationals Park, which opened ahead of the 2008 season. Before moving to Nationals Park, the team played in RFK Stadium from 2005-2007. Their team colors are scarlet red, navy blue and white.

The team struggled in the mid-to-late 2000s, but have been one of the more successful regular season teams in the NL East in recent seasons. The Nationals won their division four times (2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017) in a six year span from 2012-2017, but the team never made it past the first round of the MLB playoffs. The Nationals/Expos franchise broke through in 2019, winning their first ever pennant and World Series Championship. The team defeated the Houston Astros to claim their first title.

The Nationals have been very popular in Washington due to a pair of number one draft picks. Steven Strasburg (2009) and Bryce Harper (2010) were both highly touted draft picks, and both lived up to expectations for the Nationals franchise. Strasburg has amassed more than 100 victories and 1,600 strikeouts in his career with the team, and has been named an all-star three times in his career. Harper took the league by storm in 2012, becoming the youngest player ever selected to and play in the MLB All-Star game at the age of 19. Harper played for the Nationals from 2012-2018, making six all-star teams and winning the Rookie of the Year in 2012 and MVP in 2015. Harper left the Nationals after the 2018 season to sign the richest contract in MLB history at 13 years and $330,000,000.
